SPARTANBURG S.C. – A lone goal from
Caileen Almeida was all that was needed to propel Wofford to its first win of the 2022 campaign after a 1-0 shutout over Kennesaw State. The Terriers move to 1-0-1 on the season while Kennesaw State falls to 0-2.
Â
"Really proud of the fight from zero to 90 minutes," said head coach
Emily Grant. "We've been talking about consistency as a group from match-to-match and from minute-to-minute, and I don't think it dropped the entire day. So, I'm very proud of the fight, very proud of the grit of this group to pull out the win."
Â
Wofford struck for the lone goal of the game at the 33rd minute after Almeida deflected a shot off the goalie and past a diving Owl defender. The Terriers defense stepped up huge the rest of the way to hold the 1-0 score.
Â
The Terrier defense fended off nine second-half shots, including one in the closing seconds that sailed off the crossbar.
Â
"They changed formation at the very end and made us deal with three forwards, and it was tough. It was a lot to deal with, and the girls problem-solved," Grant said. "They made it through it and fought like heck to get our win today. So, it was awesome."Â
