Wofford Drops Hard Fought Contest with Wake Forest

Winston-Salem, N.C.- A penalty Kick awarded to Wake Forest in the 62nd minute proved the decisive strike in Wofford men's soccer's 2-0 loss to the Demon Deacons.

The Terriers did what they do best in the first half of the match - keep the opposition off the board. Wofford weathered six corner attempts for the Demon Deacons and 14 shots to only concede two shots on target- both of which senior goalkeeper Cameron Victor saved. Their efforts on the defensive half of the field kept the Terriers one of only four schools to concede one or fewer goals in the first half of matches and one of five teams to not trail at the half.

The early second half was a reprisal of the first half- in both the intensity of the Wake Forest attack and the prowess of the Wofford defense that culminated in a game saving caliber play from Cameron Victor and sophomore Zakaria Holmen.

In the 53rd minute, Wake Forest's Jeffrey White fired off a shot from close distance that was initially deflected away by Victor but popped straight to the waiting head of Wake Forest's Jahlane Forbes, which looked to be an easy head in for Forbes, but Holmen was just barely able to clear the ball before crossing the goal line.

Unable to find a counterattack, Wofford found themselves on the defense again and this time got called for the foul just inside the penalty box and conceded the match's opening goal. A goal in the 69th minute concluded scoring for the Demon Deacons and walked off the pitch with the 2-0 win.

Wofford returns to Southern Conference play on Saturday, October 14, traveling to Greensboro, North Carolina to face defending conference champion UNCG. A win for the Terriers would be the first in Greensboro since 2017 and the first series win since 2018. The match is slated for a 7 PM kickoff on ESPN+.
