Spartanburg, S.C.- Down a goal entering the last ten minutes of the match, Wofford women's soccer once again found a way to score and drew The Citadel 2-2 on Sunday, October 15.
Early into the second half the Terriers found themselves down two goals after a penalty kick awarded to The Citadel in the 51st minute made the score 2-0. However, following that goal, Wofford out shot the Bulldogs 12-7 and earned three corner kicks to only one for The Citadel.
The Terrier onslaught began in the 54th minute and netted their first of two goals on the afternoon. At the 53:15 mark sophomore
Ansley Elizalde crossed the ball in looking for fellow sophomore
Saachi Bureau, but the ball instead ricocheted to junior
Ashley Grant who's attempt was blocked.
Wofford reloaded off a tough clearance from the Bulldogs and this time it was Grant finding Elizalde for a shot rifled well outside the box that the sophomore managed to curl the shot into the top right corner of the net to cut the deficit in half. The goal was Elizalde's first of the season after leading the team in scoring last season.
Over the next thirty minutes, the Terrier attack came in waves. Grant, Bureau and Junior
Megan Childress got looks on goal between the 64th and 70th minutes. Between the 73rd and 76th minutes the Terriers earned three corner kicks and put three more shots up.
Mounting pressure from the Wofford attack reached its peak in the 86th minute when
Saachi Bureau earned a penalty kick for the Terriers upon getting fouled attempting to run down a pass in the penalty box.
The Terriers turned to sophomore
Ellie Gower to take the penalty kick and the decision proved to be the right one as Gower scored despite the Bulldog keeper guessing correctly. Gower's goal is not only her first of the season, but also the third time Wofford has found either an equalizing or game-winning goal in the final ten minutes of a match this season.
With a tie in today's contest, Wofford hangs on to the number eight seed in the Southern Conference with one match remaining. A win in the regular season finale over Furman on Sunday, October 22, and losses by UNCG and Mercer would tie the Terriers for sixth in the standings. Kickoff against Furman is set for 2 PM on Sunday, October 22, and can be seen on ESPN+.
