Spartanburg, S.C.- Wofford men's soccer prevailed over crosstown rival USC Upstate in comeback fashion behind goals from sophomore
Jakob Andersson and the game winner from junior
Magnus Kjoller in the 88th minute.
A comeback bid appeared unnecessary early on as sophomore
Nikolai Rojel scored his 20th career goal a mere 35 seconds into the match. Three saves from senior goalkeeper
Cameron Victor and 45 minutes later and the Terriers looked poised to carry a lead wire to wire.
Victor finished his night with four saves and moved his career total to 94 with at least two opportunities remaining to reach 100 career saves.
For Rojel's part in the first half, he moves past Matthew Aurednik on the D-I era single season goals list and ties Connor Davis for second with 11 goals set in 2013. The sophomore's 22 points on the season is also the most by a Terrier since Nestor Jaramillo's 22 points in 2014.
Two goals in rapid succession from the Spartans momentarily put the Terriers on the back foot because two minutes and twelve seconds after losing the lead, sophomore
Jakob Andersson rocketed a shot through a tight window to retie the match at 2-2 in the 65th minute.
The rivals traded scoring opportunities and defensive holds over the next 23 minutes before Wofford put the match away for good. Kjoller subbed on for the Terriers at the 87:07 mark and rifled the game winner home with his first touch.
A throw in for Wofford at the 87:21 mark began at the feet of Freshman
Villads Landsperg and passes from junior
Paul Jones, freshman
Fabian Menendez and Andersson eventually put the ball back at the feet of Menedez in the box who flicked the ball into such a space that Kjoller needed only load up and fire the shot- which he did cleanly and was rewarded with his second goal of the season and a 3-2 win for his team.
The win represents Wofford's first at USC Upstate since the 2015 season and the first overall series win since the 2018 season. Six wins now on the season also ties them for the most in a single season under Head Coach
Joel Tyson and tied for the most since 2016 when they won 12 matches.
The Terriers return home on Saturday, October 28, to conclude both its regular season and Southern Conference slate with a match against the Furman Paladins. A win or draw on Saturday would ensure the Terriers receive the number two seed and first round bye in the upcoming Southern Conference Tournament and a win coupled with an ETSU loss would give the Terriers its first SoCon regular season title since 2013. Kickoff is at 7 PM from Snyder Field and will be streamed on ESPN+.
