Spartanburg, S.C.- 39 seconds is all it took to swing the match from down, to drawn, to advancing to the Southern Conference Tournament Quarterfinals for Wofford women's soccer in a 2-1 win over VMI on Tuesday, October 24.
It was at the 65:10 mark and off Wofford's seventh corner kick opportunity that the Terriers found their equalizer. Down 1-0, sophomore
Ellie Gower swung the corner into the box and to the feet of freshman
Bailey Mullen for the chip in goal and the first goal of her collegiate career. Â
Not even 30 seconds later the Terriers were back on the prowl with Gower finding senior
Haley McCaffrey in space who then put a through ball behind the Keydet defense to hit an in stride junior
Megan Childress who took one touch to corral the ball and put her shot in the back of the net 39 seconds after the first goal at the 65:49 mark.
Her fourth goal of the season, and second goal in postseason play, Childress scored her first collegiate goal in last season's Southern Conference Tournament match win over Furman. Â
VMI countered over the remaining 24:11 minutes with nine shots, but only two of them on target and neither past sophomore goalkeeper
Rylee Godbold for Wofford to secure the 2-1 victory and advance to the quarterfinals of the Southern Conference Tournament. The team makes its second appearance in the quarterfinals in the past three seasons.
Head Coach
Elissa Post notched her first postseason victory- joining former head coaches Josef Lorenz, Amy Kiah, Eric Lewis and Emily Grant in winning their SoCon tournament debuts.
Wofford's opponent will be the Western Carolina Catamounts in Cullowhee, North Carolina on Friday, October 27, for a rematch of their meeting earlier in the month the Catamounts defeated the Terriers in 5-0. Kickoff for that match is scheduled for 7:00 PM on ESPN+.
