Spartanburg, S.C.- Wofford women's soccer comeback bid culminated in a game-winning goal from sophomore
Saachi Bureau with 46 seconds left to walk off the pitch 2-1 winners over the UNCG Spartans on Thursday, October 5.
A throw in for the Terriers to start the 90th minute began with a pass to senior
Meara Kelly who promptly crossed the ball into the box and the waiting feet of sophomore
Ansley Elizalde who then shuffled the ball to a falling Bureau who found just enough space to get a shot off with her left foot that bounced past UNCG keeper Emma Malone.
"Really proud of the resilience today. I know this was definitely a result we needed for morale, that we wanted. And to go down a goal and to not give up and tie the game and then have that push to continue to fight for the win is incredible. Great grit by the team today," said Head Coach
Elissa Post of the team's effort.
To set the stage for Bureau's game winner, the Terriers first had to find an equalizing goal and found it in the 82nd minute. After fighting to win a corner kick for Wofford, sophomore
Ines Obradovac cleaned up the extended set piece for Wofford with her fifth goal of the season.
Obradovac's opportunity came when the Spartan attempt to clear the ball away from the goal landed at the feet of junior Mille Murphy who tried to equalize the game herself but instead hit the crossbar and then ricocheted right to Obradovac. All five of her goals have come in an eight-match stretch and has the most goals since Katie Gilligan's team leading seven in 2019.
Not to be lost in the shuffle of late game heroics from Obradovac and Bureau, sophomore goalkeeper
Rylee Godbold put in a lion's share of work to make sure that stage was set. Godbold saved shots from point blank range in the 5th minute and then again in the 48th and 60th minutes as part of a five save night. The effort for Godbold was her first full match without allowing multiple goals and earned her her second win as a Terrier.
On the series, the Terriers have now won back-to-back matches at Snyder field against the Spartans after having not won the previous thirteen matchups dating back to the first ever meeting between the two programs in 1997. Also, as a result of tonight's win,
Elissa Post became the first coach to beat UNCG twice in Wofford women's soccer history (she was on staff as an assistant for the Terriers' win in 2021).
Wofford heads back out for the start of their final road trip of the season with ETSU on Sunday, October 8. The Terriers have won three of the past four meetings and the last two in Johnson City, Tennessee. Kickoff is at 2 PM on ESPN+.
