Knoxville, TN- Matched up against the number two scoring defense in the SEC, Wofford men's basketball hung tough with the seventh ranked Tennessee Volunteers for the first half before eventually dropping the game 82-61.
After the first 20 minutes of action, the Terriers found themselves down only five courtesies of strong efforts on the offensive glass from juniors
Jackson Sivills and
Kyler Filewich (three and four offensive rebounds respectively) leading to nine second chance points and taking care of the ball- forcing Tennessee into seven turnovers to only three Terrier turnovers.
Out of the intermission, Sivills hit his second three of the night to cut the lead to two, but a 10-0 Volunteer run in response put the game out of reach for the Terriers. Wofford would claw back as close as five after sophomore
Chase Cormier hit his third three-pointer at the 14:18 mark, but once again Tennessee responded with a 10-0 run to push the Wofford deficit back out to 15. Â
For Cormier, his efforts on the night awarded him new career highs in the scoring and shooting departments- registering 15 points on 5-for-7 shooting from the perimeter. Cormier's 15 points trailed only junior
Corey Tripp's team leading 19- tying his career high for the second time this season.
"Our guys played really hard. Our guys had great fight the whole 40 minutes… I thought our guys did a really good job of staying with our game plan, staying committed to that on both ends of the floor, and I thought, for the most part, we did a really good job getting great shots and making them work on the other end," Head Coach
Dwight Perry said of the team's effort.
Jackson Sivills logged ten points for the night to give him his highest offensive output since scoring ten points at Chattanooga back on January 25, of last season.
Offensively 61 points is the most points a mid-major opponent has put up against the Volunteers since Tennessee Tech scored 69 on November 26, 2021 (and the first mid-major opponent to score 60 points in a game against Tennessee in the same span).
Up next for Wofford is another Power 5 opponent in Virginia Tech on Sunday, November 19, for the first meeting with Hokies Head Coach Mike Young since Young accepted the position after 17 seasons at Wofford.
