Spartanburg, SC – Wofford men's basketball overcame a 7-for-35 first half shooting performance to cruise by Southern Wesleyan 75-55 and secure the third straight undefeated home non-conference slate.
Trailing by as many as 16 points in the first half, Wofford clawed back to first tie the game at the 11:46 mark of the second half, took the lead at the 10:19 mark and never looked back. The long ball served as the catalyst for the second half turnaround as the Terriers shot 9-for-15 from beyond the arc in the second half, including a string of four straight possessions that ended with three-point baskets capped off by
Corey Tripp's third triple to tie the game.
Another big key to the Terrier comeback was the ability to generate points off turnovers. Southern Wesleyan scored seven points off seven Wofford turnovers in the first half, but just two points on three Wofford turnovers in the second half. Meanwhile, all seven second half Warrior turnovers resulted in Terrier buckets after having only coughed up the ball once in the first half and not allowing any points.
A consistent force for the Terriers was junior
Kyler Filewich in the middle, who grabbed 21 rebounds to register the first Wofford 20+ rebounding performance since Howard Wilkerson tallied 20 boards at Appalachian State on January 10, 2004. The Winnipeg, Manitoba native also notched his fourth double-double of the season adding ten points- pulling him one shy of the amount of double-doubles Wofford produced as a team last season. Â
The Terriers begin the Southern Conference portion of their schedule after the New Year on Wednesday, January 3, hosting the VMI Keydets. Wofford has lost both the last two SoCon openers and SoCon home openers. Tip off from Jerry Richardson Indoor Stadium is set for 7:00 PM and can be viewed on ESPN+.
