Men’s Basketball Falls to Furman in Greenville

GREENVILLE, S.C. – On Saturday at the Bon Secours Wellness Arena, Furman started the game with an 8-0 run and would never trail as they earned an 80-67 win over the Wofford men's basketball team. The Paladins would lead by as many 19 points and Wofford would cut the lead to nine points in the second half, but Furman was able to win both games in the season series.

Wofford (13-12, 5-7) was led in scoring by B.J. Mack with 17 points, Jackson Paveletzke with 14 and Amarri Tice tied a career-high with 11 points off the bench. Mack also led the team in rebounding with eight.

Jalen Slawson led the way for Furman (19-6, 10-2) with 16 points and nine rebounds. Alex Williams had 15 points while J.P. Pegues added 13 points and seven assists.

After the 8-0 run to start the game, the Paladins extended the lead to 17-3 and then 25-8 before the Terriers were able to starting capitalizing on shots. Furman had a 42-25 advantage at the half. Wofford opened the second half with an 8-0 run that included a pair of three pointers from B.J. Mack and Jackson Paveletzke to cut the lead to nine points. The Paladins pushed the lead back into double digits and would not let Wofford get any closer. The advantage was 19 points with eight minutes to go, but at the four-minute mark the lead was back down to ten points. However only ninety seconds later the lead was back to 16 points on the way to the 80-67 final margin.

"That was a really tough start," said interim head coach Dwight Perry. "They are obviously a really talented and well coached team. They start two fifth-year seniors and a junior, anytime you give a team like that that's experienced and talented the start that we gave them - especially on the road - that's really hard to overcome.

"It is less about the team we're playing and more about us," continued Perry. "Whether we're facing Western or any of the other nine teams in the league our process is still our process. We have to keep getting better on both ends of the floor and obviously Western Carolina is who we're facing Wednesday. Western is a really good team and they had a really good win today. We have to take Sunday, Monday and Tuesday and prepare so that we can compete on both sides of the floor and play well on Wednesday."
