Kennesaw, GA.- The Wofford College women's lacrosse team used a seven-goal run in the fourth quarter to overcome a 15-9 deficit and get the win over Kennesaw State on Saturday. The Terrier's game winning goal came with only 16 seconds to play at Fifth Third Back Stadium.
Kennesaw State extended a 14-9 lead to 15-9 with 12:10 remaining in the fourth quarter.
Addison Witkowski started the comeback with 11 minutes to play.
Emma Krasinski kept it going with 8:50 on the clock with a free position attempt goal. Just 53 seconds later,
Cailin Cardillo scored to cut the deficit to three.
With 5:05 to play
Emma Stalteri cut the deficit to only two, where it would stay until
Leah Hurley scored from a
Carlie Cutinella assist with 2:34 remaining. Hurley then tied up the game under a minute later, after a Kennesaw State foul resulted in a yellow card and a free position shot and goal for Hurley. That yellow card was non-releasable and Kennesaw would remain a player down for the remaining 1:47.
Lily Barger won the ensuing draw control and the Terriers took their time, until with just 18 seconds left Hurley made a tough pass to Witkowski who turned and fired at the net beating the Owls goalie and giving the Terriers the game deciding goal.
Kennesaw State would win the draw control but was unable to get a shot off in the final 18 seconds as the Terriers closed out the victory.
"That was just a lot of heart," said head coach
Jessie Aguglia. "This team has no quit and knew that if we just work hard we can chip away at it. The defense stepped up to take away their opportunities and our shooters saw the back of the net."
Kennesaw State struck first in the game, but Wofford responded with three consecutive goals. Stalteri,
Brenna Duley and Cutinella helped the Terriers take a 3-1 lead. After Kennesaw tied it up at 3
Carley Irvin scored to give the Terriers a 4-3 lead. The Owls would level the game up at four at the end of one quarter.
In the second quarter a quick Kennesaw State goal was matched by a fifth Terrier goal from
Shadan Bankston. Kennesaw State then scored three goals in a row to take an 8-5 lead into the half time break.
Wofford started the second half on a 3-1 scoring run with goals from Witkowski, Irvin and
Olivia Abe. Kennesaw then responded with a 4-0 scoring run.
Emma Krasinski added a free position goal to score the Terriers ninth, but they trailed 14-9 after three.
In the fourth quarter, after Kennesaw State scored first, the Terriers used the next 12 minutes to mount a seven-goal run and even the game up with 1:47 to play. A Kennesaw State yellow card led to the 15
th goal also put Kennesaw State down a man for the remainder of regulation. With under 20 seconds to play
Leah Hurley passed it near the net to
Addison Witkowski to beat the keeper and give Wofford the game winner.
Ella Smithers picked up the win and moved to 2-0 in the net for Wofford after coming in late in the first half. Smithers made four saves and allowed eight goals.
The loss went to Errin Crowe who conceded 11 goals and made one save in the second half.
Witkowski led the Terriers with three goals and Abe led in assists with four.
The Terriers were led in groundballs by Stalteri, Barett Rowe and
Kristen Courtemanche with three each.

The Terriers five-game road stretch continues as they will head to Charlotte to take on Queens University on Monday afternoon.
"We feel good about where we are. We haven't hit our ceiling so it's just taking these last two wins and building off of them" Aguglia said. "We are taking it one game at a time and hopefully we can put 60 minutes together at the right time of the season."
