GREENSBORO, N.C. – The Wofford men's tennis team defeated UNCG by a 5-2 score on Friday afternoon at the UNCG Tennis Courts. The Terriers took two of the three doubles matches to earn a point and then won four of the six singles matches for their first Southern Conference victory of the season.
In doubles,
Will Fullett and
Ian Rasheed earned a 6-3 win at the #1 position to start things off.
Robbie Young and
Alex Horn clinched the point for the Terriers with a 7-5 victory at the #2 position.
Ashe Ray and
Max Graham were up 6-5 at the #3 position, but were defeated 7-6 with a 7-4 score in the tiebreaker.
Wofford started singles play by winning the first set in five of the six matches.
Alex Horn was the first to finish with a 6-4, 6-1 win at #4 singles.
Ian Rasheed claimed a 6-4, 6-4 win at the #6 singles position to give the Terriers a 3-0 lead in the match. At #3 singles, the Spartans picked up the match. With a 6-4, 6-3 win at #5 singles,
Max Graham clinched the match for Wofford.
Ashe Ray added a 6-2, 7-5 win at #1 singles before
Robbie Young was defeated 3-6, 6-2, 6-3 at #2 singles in the lone match that was decided in three sets.
"It was an incredible effort on the road today," said head coach
Rod Ray. "Our team demonstrated the love they have for each other and I couldn't be prouder. It was just a gutsy effort."
Wofford (5-11, 1-2) will return home on Sunday, March 26, as they host Samford at 11:00 a.m. The Spartans are now 4-14 overall and 0-5 in SoCon play.
