Wofford Baseball Downs Samford 6-2 to Claim Series

Terriers utilize gem from Marchal, pair of homers by Johnson and Galanie

SPARTANBURG, S.C. – After a gem from starter Matthew Marchal, the Wofford baseball team turned in clutch late-inning hitting to defeat the Samford Bulldogs, 6-2, at Russell C. King Field Sunday afternoon. The win moves Wofford to 29-10 (8-4 SoCon) and notches a series win for the Terriers. Samford drops to 22-18 (8-4 SoCon).

The series win is the fourth-straight SoCon series triumph for Wofford. At 8-4 in the league, the Terriers have moved into a tie for first place.

Wofford starter Matthew Marchal (8-1) earned the win behind 7.0 strong innings of work. He allowed just two runs on four hits with six strikeouts. Marchal was perfect through the first 3.2 innings, including five-straight punchouts between the second and third frames. Sam Stratton and Dom Marcoccio each provided a scoreless inning of relief behind Marchal, with Marcoccio adding two strikeouts.

Samford starter Will Lynch (3-3) suffered the loss after giving up two runs on three hits and five walks in 5.1 innings.

Trey Yunger provided the only multi-hit effort for the Terriers with two, and he drew a walk to reach base three times. Andrew Mannelly added an RBI double off the bench, and Jack Renwick's hit was an RBI triple. Ryan Galanie and Gunnar Johnson both clubbed home runs for their only hits. Johnson's was a three-run bomb while Galanie's was a solo shot.

The contest was a pitchers' duel to start, with neither offense able to crack through until the sixth inning. In the top of that frame, Samford broke the scoreless tie with a home run to left, pulling in front 1-0.

The lead was short-lived as Wofford responded with its own clout in the bottom of the inning. After a single and a walk put two runners on with one out, Samford made its first move to the bullpen. The new reliever induced a flyout to bring up Gunnar Johnson. The Terriers designated hitter also hit a fly ball, but his traveled well over the left center wall for a three-run game-changing long ball. Wofford pulled in front, 3-1.

The Bulldogs got a run back with an RBI double in the top of the seventh, bring the margin to 3-2.

But in the bottom of the seventh, Ryan Galanie followed Johnson's lead with his own homer, the 12th of the season for the slugger. That solo bomb to right made the score 4-2 for Wofford.

The Terriers added a pair of insurance runs in the bottom of the eighth. Andrew Mannelly roped a double into to right field to score a run, and Jack Renwick followed with a triple over the left fielder's head that plated Mannelly. The score was 6-2.

The margin stayed there as Dom Marcoccio locked down the contest in the top of the ninth, striking out the final two Bulldog batters to notch a 6-2 win and a series triumph.

Wofford hits the road for a pair of midweek games to kick off a nine-game road stretch. The Terriers travel to face UNC Asheville Tuesday evening at 5:00 p.m. before a Wednesday night bout at Davidson starting at 6:00 p.m.
