RADFORD, Va. – In the final game of the 2023 season, the Wofford women's lacrosse team took an early lead and came away with a 17-13 win at Radford on Saturday afternoon. The Terriers added to their all-time win record as they posted a seventh victory to finish off the year.
Leah Hurley and
Addison Witkowski both led Wofford (7-10, 4-5 Big South) over Radford (5-12, 2-7 Big South) with three goals each at the Student Outdoor Recreation Complex.
Brenna Duley,
Carley Irvin and
Olivia Abe each added two goals, while
Emma Stalteri,
Carlie Cutinella,
Ainsleigh Mancini,
Emma Gentile and
Emma Krasinski all added one. Abe also led the way with four assists for six points.
Senior goalie
Aislinn Washburn closed out her Wofford career by picking up the win with seven saves in the matchup. The loss went to Highlander goalie Olivia Hunter.
The Terriers opened up the game on a huge scoring run, as they scored seven goals in the first 7:38 of the game. Just 51 seconds into the game Krasinski got Wofford on the board, which was quickly followed by a goal from Witkowski to put Wofford up 2-0.
Cutinella then made that a 3-0 lead with 12:25 still to play in the first. After Radford responded with two quick goals the Terriers followed up with four straight goals. Stalteri got Wofford their fourth goal and that was followed up by Duley scoring from a Cutinella assist. Gentile added the Terrier's sixth goal on a free position shot before Hurley scored with an assist from Abe to put the Terriers up 7-2. Wofford was held scoreless for the final 7:38 of the first as Radford cut the deficit to two.
The second quarter started slow for both teams but Wofford was able to add four goals - including three straight goals to end the quarter – to take an 11-6 lead into the halftime break.
After Wofford sored first in the third quarter and built a 14-8 lead following a goal by
Olivia Abe, Radford scored three straight goals to cut the lead to 14-11 early in the fourth quarter.
In the fourth quarter,
Ainsleigh Mancini had a goal and
Addison Witkowski added two goals to build the lead back to 17-12. The Highlanders scored the last goal with 13 seconds left for the 17-13 final margin.
