SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The Wofford women's tennis team earned a 5-2 win over Western Carolina on a sunny Easter Sunday at the Reeves Tennis Center. The Catamounts won two of the three doubles matches and then the Terriers won five of the six singles matches for the win, with the match clinched by senior
Georgia Fischer in her final home appearance.
During doubles play, the Catamounts earned the point with a 6-3 win at the #3 position and a 6-1 win at the #2 position. At #1 doubles,
Georgia Fischer and
Lily Woods were down 4-5. They broke serve to tie the match at 5, took a 6-5 lead and then broke serve again for the 7-5 win.
After the first set of singles, each team had the lead in three matches. The Catamounts took the first singles point with a straight-set win at the #6 position.
Lily Woods got the Terriers on the board with a 6-1, 6-3 win at the #1 position. At #3 singles,
Brianna Wilbur won the first set 6-2, but then lost the second set 5-7. She was able to claim the match with a 6-2 win in the third set, which tied the overall match at 2-2.
At the #5 singles position,
Emely Kahrs took the first set 7-6 with a 7-4 tiebreaker. The second set was also tied at 6 before Kahrs put the match away with a 7-1 tiebreaker win which gave Wofford a 3-2 lead. The two remaining matches were decided in the third set. At #4 singles,
Georgia Fischer lost the first set 3-6, but responded with 6-1 and 6-3 wins which clinched the match for the Terriers.
Breda Brennan closed out the match at #2 singles by coming back from down in the first set for a 4-6, 6-1, 6-2 final score.
"I could not be prouder of our team for coming back in singles after dropping the doubles point," said head coach
Krissy Hall. "We competed hard on every court and had great energy. I was also really proud of Georgia for clinching the match on her senior day. This win will give us momentum heading into the conference tournament."
The Terriers (11-10, 2-5) will compete in the Southern Conference Tournament beginning on Thursday, April 20, at Chattanooga. Seedings for the tournament will be announced next week. Western Carolina is now 13-7 overall and 1-3 in league play.
Following the match, Wofford honored senior
Georgia Fischer. She has appeared in 32 singles matches and 28 doubles matches during her time at Wofford and will graduate with a degree in German and government in May.
