JACKSONVILLE, Fla. –
Tanner Henry from the Wofford College track and field team competed at the 2023 NCAA Division I Men's and Women's Outdoor Track and Field East preliminary competition held at the University of North Florida on Friday.
Henry, a senior from Kingsport, Tennessee, cleared 2.09 meters in the high jump last weekend to qualify 36th in the region. It marked his second time in the preliminaries (2019) and he is the only male field athlete to qualify in school history.
In the first flight of the high jump, Henry cleared 1.99 meters in his first attempt. At 2.04 meters, he cleared it in his second attempt. With the bar raised to 2.09 meters, he was unable to successfully clear in his three attempts. He finished 25
th overall out of the 48 qualifiers, an improvement of eleven places from his qualification.
During his career, Henry won the high jump at both the 2023 Indoor and Outdoor Southern Conference Championships. He holds school records in both the indoor and outdoor high jump, along with the indoor pole vault and heptathlon.
The top twelve qualifiers out of the two regions (24 total) will compete in the NCAA Division I Men's and Women's Outdoor Track and Field Championships held June 7-10 in Austin, Texas.
This was the fifth straight season that the Terriers have advanced at least one participant to the NCAA East Preliminary. Kerrington Johnson competed in the 100-meter hurdle preliminaries on Thursday for Wofford.
