SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The Southern Conference announced today its selections for athletes of the month for all competition in April, with
Lucas Mahlstedt of Wofford baseball taking home Pitcher of the Month honors. The selections are made by the league office.
Â
This is the first monthly award for Mahlstedt in his career, and he is the first Terrier to earn Pitcher of the Month honors since
Dalton Rhadans claimed the award in March last season. This is the third monthly recognition for Wofford this season, as Mahlstedt joins
Ryan Galanie, who claimed Player of the Month in back-to-back months to open the campaign. A Terrier has been honored in some fashion in all three monthly recognitions this baseball season, with the three awards tying last season's three recognitions for most in a season in program history.
Â
Mahlstedt anchored the Wofford bullpen in April, tallying a 1.38 ERA across 26.0 innings in eight appearances. He recorded a pair of saves with three wins and no losses. The sophomore surrendered just four runs on 18 hits and four walks while striking out 18. Mahlstedt, a native of Ormond Beach, Fla., gave up no runs in five of his eight appearances and never allowed more than two. At Charleston, he was nearly perfect out of the bullpen, tossing 4.2 perfect frames before allowing a hit, but it was all he gave up as he retired the next batter for 5.0 scoreless innings of relief to claim the win. Mahlstedt limited his walks, issuing zero in five of his appearances with no more than two in a game. His game high for the month was four punchouts against Western Carolina to help him notch a save.
Â
Mahlstedt and the Terriers return to SoCon play tomorrow to kick off a weekend series at UNCG. First pitch against the Spartans is scheduled for 6:00 p.m. Friday night.
