SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The Wofford baseball team completed their first sweep of the season with a pair of wins over Mercyhurst on Saturday afternoon at Russell C. King Field. The Terriers won the first game by a 10-0 margin in seven innings and added a 13-1 win in seven innings in the second game.
In the three-game weekend series, Wofford combined for a total of 35 runs against Mercyhurst. This is the third-straight season the Terriers have opened their season with a sweep that featured 30+ runs.
"Our team complemented each other really well today," assistant head coach
Pat Brown said on the team's doubleheader win. "The offense, the pitching and the defense helped and feed off each other very well."Â
Game One:
Alec Bouchard (1-0) got the start in the first game of the doubleheader for the Terriers. Bouchard went five scoreless innings, giving up four hits and striking out eight batters.
Blayne Newman made his first appearance as a Terrier in the sixth inning to close for Wofford. Newman gave up one hit and struck out four batters to leave the Lakers scoreless.
Cade Collins and
Niko Brini led the Terriers with two runs, two hits and one RBI each.
Ben Timblin followed with one run, one hit and career-high three RBI.
The Terriers came out swinging hot in the first inning, bringing in three runs on four hits. Leadoff batter
Cade Collins was the first to score for Wofford after he singled. The momentum didn't stop there for the team. Tribble scored a run in the third inning from a stolen base and throwing error to bring the Terriers a 4-0 lead. Wofford didn't stop scoring in the fourth, bringing in four runs with four stolen bases to advance their score 8-0. The Terriers would close it out in the seventh by bringing in two more runs from
Harrison Campi and
Andrew Mannelly to shut out to the Lakers 10-0.
Wofford ended the game with 10 runs, eight hits, and nine RBI with one error. Mercyhurst had five hits and two errors.

Game Two:
Cullen Condon (1-0) started on the mound in the second game of the doubleheader. Condon threw four innings, giving up three hits, one run and striking out two batters. Condon held the Lakers scoreless for the first three innings.
Branton Little took over in the fifth inning, giving up one hit and striking out one batter.
Cade Bouknight closed out the game for Wofford in his first appearance for the Terriers by only allowing one hit.
Harrison Campi led the Terriers in this game with one run, two hits, and a career-high 7 RBI. Campi achieved his first career grand slam in the second inning to seal the win for the Terriers. Timblin followed behind with one run, two hits and two RBI. Freshman
Brady Gold had a strong debut with one triple and one RBI in just two at bats.
Wofford kept their momentum from game one and amped it up for game two of the doubleheader, starting off strong with four runs on two hits to end the first inning. Collins was the first to score for the Terriers again in today's matchup. The second inning didn't disappoint with Wofford bringing in six runs on two hits to widen their lead to 10-0. Mercyhurst kept the Terriers hitless for two straight innings before Gold tripled to bring in the run Wofford needed to close out the game with a 13-1 win.Â
