Women's Soccer Falls to Queens in Season Opener

Charlotte, N.C. – The Wofford women's soccer team opened the 2023 season on the wrong side of the scoreboard, falling to the Queens (NC) Royals 1-0.

The first half of the match saw the Terriers get plenty of looks at the goal but couldn't put any of their five first half shots on goal past Queens goalkeeper Erica Turner. The defense meanwhile snuffed out any Royals attack, conceding seven shots in the half; however, none of those seven were on target.

The second half began with Queens' first attempt on goal and the only score of the game. Junior Sophia Muetterties converted a right footed shot into the bottom right corner of the net in the 49th minute and from there the Royals were content to sit back and rely on a defense that only allowed 1.25 goals a game last season. Junior Millie Murphy would tally the Terriers final attempt on goal in the 72nd minute but was again unable to send it past Turner. A corner kick with 50 seconds remaining in the contest represented the final opportunity for
Wofford to find an equalizer but was unable to convert the set piece.

Postgame Head Coach Elissa Post was pleased with the look of her team's attack despite nothing to show for it on the scoreboard, "Good stuff. Just weren't able to put the ball in the back of the net, that's how it goes sometimes."

Junior Megan Childress had the Terriers best chance at goal in the opening minutes of the second half, rocketing a right footed shot that was just barely unable to dip below the goalie and find the back of the net.

The team's next opportunity to get into the win column comes Sunday against the Elon Phoenix from Rudd Field in Elon, North Carolina on Sunday, August 20, at 6:30 PM and can be seen on Flo Sports.
