Asheville, N.C.- In their final road match of the non-conference slate, Wofford's women's soccer dropped a tough contest to the UNC Asheville Bulldogs.
Senior Goalkeeper
Caroline Doss faced early pressure from the Bulldog attack and handled the pressure, notching career saves numbers 142 and 143. The Terriers' offense countered with three attempts on goal of their own from senior
Haley McCaffrey, junior
Ellie Gower and Sophomore
Ansley Elizalde but UNC Asheville's goalkeeper matched Doss' effort and made the saves.
Freshman midfielder
Katherine Elliott had a chance to send the Terriers into the break with the lead at the 41:21 mark, however, couldn't find open space and the match went to the intermission tied at zero for the third time this season and the second consecutive game.
Wofford's best chance to score came early in the second half when Junior
Megan Childress ripped a shot to the top right portion of the goal at the 51:38 mark, but the shot was deflected up and over the goal by the goalie and the Terriers would have to settle for a corner kick that was ultimately unsuccessful. The Bulldog counter resulted in the game's first score and Taylor Gardner scored her first goal of the season in the 64th minute.
UNC Asheville would almost tally a second goal immediately after scoring, but Doss rebounded and made the save- the fourth of her six saves on the night. The effort from the senior keeper was her best of the season and most saves since saving seven against Chattanooga in the 2022 Southern Conference tournament.
Elizalde would get an opportunity to score another equalizer against the Bulldogs in the 73rd minute, having done so in last season's season opening draw with the Bulldogs, however once again, UNC Asheville's keeper was up to the task. Sophomore Bella Steiner tallied a shot on goal in her first game action of the season in the 81st minute. Steiner couldn't find the back of the net and the match would end 1-0.
Coming up for the Terriers is the first of a four-match home stand starting on Sunday, September 3, against the Navy Midshipmen at 1 PM from Snyder Field and can be seen on ESPN+.
