Game Recap: Women's Soccer | | Tyler Zaubi

Women’s Soccer Falls at Home to Navy

Spartanburg, S.C.- In the first ever meeting between Wofford women's soccer and the Navy Midshipmen, the Terriers fell 3-1 on Sunday, September 3.

The early portion of the game was a battle for possession and each team only managed one shot on goal- neither challenging the respective goalkeeper. It was the 20th minute that saw the game's first action when Navy's Alexa Riddle scored her third goal of the season past senior goalkeeper Caroline Doss to put the Mids up 1-0. Wofford responded with two shots off target before sophomore Saachi Bureau converted the shot on goal attempt for her first goal in a Wofford uniform and bring the game to a 1-1 stalemate in the 40th minute.

With halftime looming, Navy put themselves back on top courtesy of Isabella Romano's first goal of the season on the counterattack from a Wofford corner that caught the Terrier defense out of position and the goalkeeper too far from the net to make the save and the Mids led at the break 2-1.

Coming out of the half, the Terriers put together two chances to find the equalizer but neither materialized. The first came in the form of a corner in the 51st minute and the second in the 55th minute when Junior Megan Childress' shot was just over the top of
the crossbar and gave Navy the goal kick.

Sophomore Ines Obradovac also had a chance to net the tying goal in the 74th minute but an impressive save from Midshipmen goalkeeper Mattie Gallagher forced the Virginia Tech transfer to settle for a corner kick that ultimately didn't translate to a goal.
Navy meanwhile only managed to put two shots on goal in the second half, the fist saved by Caroline Doss in the 48th minute and the second in the 84th minute that found the back of the net that all but sealed the game. A shot off target from sophomore
Ellie Gower was the Terriers' only opportunity to claw a goal back and the match ended at 3-1.

From here, Wofford begins a three-match stretch against Big South schools beginning on Friday, September 8, when they welcome Charleston Southern to Spartanburg for a rematch of Wofford's 2-1 win in Charleston last season. The Terriers will then host Gardner-Webb on Sunday, September 10, at 5 PM, also here at Snyder Field.
