SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The Wofford College men's and women's cross country teams began the 2023 season on Friday afternoon in the Eye Opener at the Roger Milliken Research Center Park. The women were eighth and the men were 13th overall in the meet.
In the women's 5K race,
Alexus Atkins was 51st overall in 19:07.2 and
Becca Hinds was 60
th in 19.24.0.
Mary Claire Ridgeway (19:30.5),
Chloe Gilbert (29:16.5), and
Kimber Keene (20:25.4) rounded out the scorers for the Terriers.
Camille Terracina (20:41.8),
Ava Fowler (20:53.2),
Franny Tocco (20:56.2),
Morgan Roberts (21:16.7),
Kristen Hallman (21:22.3), and
Emma O'Connell (22:40.3) also finished for Wofford.
The men's 8K competition followed and
Carson Archie was the top Terrier to finish in 26:34.8 for 49
th place. Freshman
Liam Jones was 92
nd overall at 28:28.1, followed by
James Moon (28:57.4),
Dillon Shin (29:20.2) and
Brendan Roper (29:34.1) to complete the scoring.
Jack Tillman (29:39.6),
James Blackwelder (29:54.1),
Ethan Hearn (30:02.9),
Will Berger (30:05.3), and Nathan Hopkins (30:55.6) completed the course as well.
Overall, Furman was first in the women's race of 17 teams with 25 points, followed by Clemson, Liberty, South Carolina and East Tennessee State. The men's race of 17 teams was won by Liberty with 25 points, with Furman, Clemson, Augusta and East Tennessee State rounding out the top five.
Both the men's and women's teams will be back in action on Saturday, September 15 at the Covered Bridge Open hosted by Appalachian State.
