Lexington, Va.- Sophomore
Ines Obradovac put in her third goal in four matches in the eleventh minute and the Wofford women's soccer team never looked back in their 2-0 win over the VMI Keydets on the opening night of Southern Conference play.
The opening stages of the match were marked by physical play from both teams that drew multiple fouls against both teams and culminated in the first set piece of the match off a deflected shot from junior
Megan Childress just shy of the 9:30 mark. Senior
Addie Marlett lined up to take the corner kick for the Terriers and found Childress on the far side of the goal who passed it out to sophomore
Ellie Gower who got it to senior
Meara Kelly who then flicked it back towards Obradovac who then finally put the ball in the net. The sophomore's strike is the earliest the Terriers have scored this season and remain undefeated when scoring first.
VMI's counterattack came in waves but every time the Wofford defense stood tall to deny the equalizing goal. The combination of
Meara Kelly,
Addie Marlett and freshman
Bailey Mullen safely forced two shots off target in quick succession before VMI could finally put a true shot on target in the 16th minute that was safely saved by Doss who made all three of her saves in the first 15:30 minutes of the match.
When the defense wasn't directing shots off target or funneling them into the waiting arms of Doss, they were drawing the Keydet offense offsides to the tune of four times within a 25-minute stretch.
Wofford countered the VMI counter with their own barrage of shots to close out the half to try and cushion the lead. Sophomore Bella Steiner, who knocked in the game winning goal against VMI last season, found room to rifle a shot past VMI's keeper for her first goal of the season in the 41st minute to give Wofford some padding they would not ultimately need.
The second half saw the Terriers play keep away and use a constant stream of looks on the VMI goal to prevent any chance of the Keydets getting back into the match and improved to 3-5-2 on the season and 1-0 in the SoCon.
Following this match the Terriers will welcome the Samford Bulldogs to Snyder Field for a rematch of last season's 2-1 home defeat to the Bulldogs on Sunday, September 24. Kickoff for that match is slated for 2 PM and will be streamed on ESPN+.
