Macon, GA- The Wofford women's soccer team found itself in a 3-0 deficit early in the second half and was not able to complete the comeback bid in a loss at Mercer on Thursday, September 28.
The Terriers were put on the back foot very early in the match, neutralizing two corners in a span of 30 seconds within the first five minutes of the match. Mercer followed that up with an onslaught of shots from the 17th to 23rd minutes that the Terrier defense was able to either maneuver off target or outright block.
It wasn't until the 35th minute that either team would land the first strike and it was Mercer. Wofford's defense prevented Mercer from doubling the lead in quick succession- forcing shots off target in the 37th and 39th minutes and funneling the on target shot into the hands of sophomore goalkeeper
Rylee Godbold.
Mercer came out of the half and quickly tripled the lead on successive shots on goal in the 50th and 54th minutes. Sophomore
Ines Obradovac found Wofford's first strike in the 58th minute- leaving a little over 30 minutes of action to find the remaining two goals. However, the Mercer defense would only concede one corner kick and two off target shots to secure their win.
For Obradovac, the goal comes as the latest in a series of productive outings. The sophomore has now scored in four of the last six matches and is now the team leader in goals scored and points. Godbold's start in goal is the first of her career and posted a career-high five saves. Freshman
Bailey Mullen became the first Terrier of the season to eclipse the 1000 minutes played mark.
Coming up next for Wofford is the other half of their road trip taking on the Western Carolina Catamounts in Cullowhee, North Carolina. Kickoff is scheduled for 3 PM and can be viewed on ESPN+.
