Spartanburg, SC – Wofford men's basketball led wire-to-wire in front of a sold-out crowd at Jerry Richardson Indoor Stadium against the Furman Paladins- defeating them 77-67 and snapping a four-game slide against the Paladins and stopping a two-game slide in the SoCon.
In a reversal of last season's match-up, Wofford came out shooting 6-for-14 and while holding Furman to one for its first eight attempts to lead 17-6 going into the second media timeout. The Paladins cut the lead to two points twice in the closing minutes of the opening frame, but Wofford responded with an 8-0 run over the final 81 seconds to lead by double digits at the half.
Most of the damage was done inside the paint as Wofford outscored Furman 24-4 in the paint in the first half (46-14 over the entire game). Leading that charge was junior
Kyler Filewich- who posted 13 points (6-for-6 shooting) and seven rebounds to lead all players in both categories.
The Paladins briefly halved their deficit in the second half, trailing 52-47 with 11:01 remaining, but the Terriers responded with a 12-2 run over the next three minutes and twenty-three seconds to push the lead back out to 15 points- effectively clinching the game for the Terriers. Junior
Corey Tripp scored 14 points in the closing frame to help the Terriers close out the contest and finished with 20 points, 2 rebounds, 5 assists, and a block.
Tripp has now scored 20+ points in consecutive contests for the first time since the Northern Classic when he scored 21 against UNC Asheville and 20 against Lipscomb back on November 25 & 26, 2023.
Filewich meanwhile was able to collect the remaining boards to finish with his seventh double-double of the season (17 pts., 10 reb.)- the most by a Terrier since Cameron Jackson also recorded seven double-doubles during the 2018-19 season.
Wofford is on the road for its next contest, going to Birmingham, Alabama, to face the Samford Bulldogs on Wednesday, January 31, before returning to Jerry Richardson Indoor Stadium for a rematch with the Western Carolina Catamounts on Saturday, February 3. Both matches can be seen on ESPN+.
