Wofford Men's Soccer Secures First Win Over Mercer in Macon

Macon, Ga.- The Wofford men's soccer team prevailed over the Mercer Bears Saturday night at Betts Stadium 1-0 due to late-game heroics by Villads Landsperg, Magnus Kjoller and Leo Ledin. The win moves Wofford to 6-5-2 (2-2-0 SoCon) while dropping Mercer to 5-4-6 (1-2-1 SoCon). The victory marks Wofford's first win against Mercer in Macon in ten games played.

The first half saw Mercer go on the offensive early and maintain momentum throughout the first half. The Bears took four shots in the first half and put young goalkeeper Leo Ledin to work early. The Terrier net-minder was up to the task, making two saves in the half to keep the Bears off the board. The Terrier offense was held in check in the first half, not allowed a shot in the half.

The second half saw little action as the Terriers' offense began to settle into the game. In the 79th minute, a ball from Magnus Kjoller found the left foot of Villads Landsperg who slotted the shot bottom right of the net for his first career goal.

"It was an amazing feeling and something that I had been wanting for a long time," said Villads Landsperg. "All credit, however, goes to the team. I think we had a great overall performance tonight and that we deserved those three points today."

The Mercer offense tried to reassert control but failed to do so as the Wofford defense began to slowly bleed out the clock, cutting down on scoring opportunities. A shot off target in the 84th minute would end any comeback attempt, as the Terriers would hold possession for the remainder of the clock for the 1-0 win.

Wofford was outshot nine to five in tonight's match, with the Bears firing five shots on goal to only the Terriers' two. However, Leo Ledin would secure all five save opportunities tonight, earning his fifth clean sheet of the season, tying for the most in the nation by a freshman. Mercer had eight corners to Wofford's three with 17 total fouls in the game.

Wofford gears up for its toughest matchup of the season, as it travels to Clemson to face the 16th ranked Tigers. Kick-off is Tuesday, October 29, at 6:00 p.m.
