GREENSBORO, N.C. – The Wofford women's soccer team fell on the road 2-0 to UNC Greensboro on Sunday at the UNCG Soccer Stadium. The Terriers kept the game within one score for most of the afternoon, but the Spartans furthered the deficit with an 87
th minute goal.
Wofford fell in a hole early, allowing a Spartan goal in just the second minute of the game. The early score came from a miscue from the Terrier back line. The Terrier defense tightened up for the remainder of the half, not giving up another goal despite seven first half shots from UNCG.
Elizabeth Navola tallied two saves in the first half, stopping shots in the 13
th and 24
th minutes.
Wofford saw a few opportunities to strike in the first half, but the team could not get on the board.
Megan Childress took the first shot of the day for the Terriers, along with
Ines Obradovac firing off the final four shots of the half, including a great ball that bounced off the top post. The team would head into the break trailing UNCG 1-0.
The Spartans had an aggressive approach coming into the latter half, taking three shots within the first 12 minutes of action. Navola continued her busy day, fending off two of the three attempts.
Ellie Gower found a hole in the defense and sent off a rocket in the 59
th minute, but the UNCG goalkeeper found her first save of the day on the shot to keep the Terriers off the board.
Megan Childress continued to attack, finding two more shots to bring her total to three.
Delaney Minor recorded the second shot on goal for the team in the 73
rd minute, however, the Spartan keeper denied it.
Navola continued her busy afternoon, facing six more shots before the final whistle. The freshman keeper was able to keep UNCG from scoring its second goal until the 87
th minute when a deflected shot by a Terrier defender rolled into the back of the net. Wofford would go on to lose the game 2-0.
UNCG out-shot Wofford 16 to 9, with the Terriers conceding nine shots on goal while taking two. Navola ended the day with seven saves compared to two by the Spartan keeper. UNCG finished the day with six corner kicks, while Wofford took three.
The Terriers will see two home games next week against both ETSU and Western Carolina. The matchup with ETSU, which was originally scheduled for October 3, will be played on Thursday, October 10, with kick-off set for 6:00 pm. The team will play host to Western Carolina on Sunday, October 13, at 2:00 pm.
