SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The Wofford College football team held a 17-13 lead at halftime, but The Citadel rallied with 17 unanswered points in the second half to come away with a 30-17 win on Saturday afternoon at Gibbs Stadium. The Terriers had three turnovers in the fourth quarter.
Wofford is now 5-6 overall and 3-5 in the Southern Conference. The Citadel is 5-6 overall and 3-5 in league play.
Ryan Ingram led the Terriers with 103 rushing yards on twelve carries, while
Amari Odom was 14-of-21 passing. The Bulldogs were led by Cooper Wallace with nine carries for 84 yards and a touchdown.
"The bottom line is you can't turn the ball over, you can't give up big plays, and you have to get off the field on third down," said head coach
Shawn Watson. "We didn't do that in the second half. You can't turn it over when you have drives going and you have to give yourself a chance on offense. They hit some big plays on us on critical third downs that kept drives alive. I love our seniors and what they have given us. They have been a big part of everything we have been doing the past two years and I can't say enough about them."
The Terriers had the ball first and
Ryan Ingram had a 35-yard first down run and added a first down on an eleven-yard rush, with a personal foul penalty adding fifteen yards to the play. J.T. Smith Jr. capped the drive with a 25-yard touchdown reception from
Amari Odom to take a 7-0 lead with 11:32 on the clock in the first quarter. The Bulldogs had one first down before punting. On the punt,
Isaiah Wadsworth blocked it and it was recovered by
Javario Tinch, who returned it 34 yards for a touchdown. The Terriers had a 14-0 lead at 8:26 in the first quarter. On the next drive by the Bulldogs, they had a 28-yard reception and added a first down on a pass interference call. The Citadel had a 44-yard field goal to make it a 14-3 game with 2:23 on the clock in the first quarter.
With the ball back, Wofford gained two first downs before punting. The Citadel converted a fourth-and-one and added a first down run. Javonte Graves-Billips caught a 33-yard touchdown pass for a 14-10 game with 9:55 left in the second quarter. Wofford had three first downs before being faced with a fourth-and-two.
Ryan Ingram picked up the first down as the Terriers moved inside the redzone. Wofford's
Devery Cagle had a 36-yard field goal to push the lead to 17-10 with 1:41 left in the first half. The Citadel had two first downs to move across midfield. After two more first downs, they hit a 39-yard field goal as time expired to make it a 17-13 game at the half.
To open the second half, the Bulldogs had a 45-yard reception on third down to move inside the 20-yard line. On fourth-and-one from the ten-yard line, they picked up the first down with a run. The Wofford defense held, and the Bulldogs had to settle for a 28-yard field goal with 7:22 left in the third quarter. The Terriers went three-and-out and punted. After a first down run, Cooper Wallace went 54 yards down the far sideline for a touchdown. The Citadel had a 23-17 lead at the 4:25 mark of the third quarter. The Terriers went three-and-out on their next possession.
After the Bulldogs had one first down, they punted with 14:00 on the clock in the fourth quarter.
Ryan Ingram had a 12-yard run, but fumbled and the ball was recovered by the Bulldogs at the 22-yard line. On the first play of the drive, Javonte Graves-Phillips caught a 22-yard touchdown for a 30-17 lead with 13:44 left in the game. Wofford gained three first downs, but a fumble was recovered by the Bulldogs at the 25-yard line. The Citadel had three first downs and then a 52-yard field goal attempt was wide right with 2:51 remaining. Wofford had a first down pass to

Amari Odom had a 32-yard completion to
Dylan Djete. The Bulldogs intercepted a pass with 1:45 left in the game. They were able to take a knee three times to secure the win.
Wofford had 267 total yards, with 159 passing yards. The Citadel had 357 total yards, with 191 of those rushing yards. Wofford had 15 first downs to 20 for the Bulldogs. Wofford was 3-of-8 on third down and 1-of-1 on fourth down. The Citadel was 7-of-16 on third down and 2-of-2 on fourth down. The Citadel was called for eight penalties, while Wofford was called for seven. The Citadel had a 35:47 to 24:13 time of possession advantage.

This was the 78
th meeting between the two teams in a series that began in 1916. Wofford has won two of the last three meetings.
Ryan Ingram rushed for 103 yards on 12 carries. It was his second 100+ rushing game of the season and sixth of his career.
The Terriers scored a touchdown on their opening drive of the game for the first time this season.
C.J. Coombes and
David Powers led the Wofford defense with ten tackles each.
Marion Smokes had two sacks.
The Terriers will visit the University of South Carolina on Saturday, Nov. 23, to close out the 2024 season.
