Volleyball Notches Record Sweep to Reach SoCon Semifinals

Terriers down Chattanooga in straight sets to advance in SoCon Tournament

SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The No. 2 seeded Wofford volleyball team rolled Friday night in Jerry Richardson Indoor Stadium in the quarterfinal round of the Southern Conference Tournament, defeating the No. 7 Chattanooga Mocs in three sets to advance to the semifinals for a second-straight season. The defending champion Terriers improve to 21-8 as the Mocs end their campaign at 17-15.

The sweep marks Wofford's 14th of the season, setting a new single-season program record for the Division I era. The previous high was 13 set in the 2009 campaign.

Wofford dominated on offense, posting a .315 hitting clip to the .176 mark of Chattanooga. This included 55 Terrier kills to the 33 of the Mocs alongside a 55-29 assists advantage for Wofford. The Terriers sent home four aces while allowing none and issued five blocks to the four of Chattanooga. Defensively, Wofford dominated with 66 digs to 48 of the Mocs.

"I think going into this tournament we really emphasized in everything having relentless pursuit, and that really showed tonight," said Mary Emily Morgan of the defensive effort. "It shows in our blocking, and it shows in our defense and in our hustle plays. I was really proud of how everyone just came out ready to play for three sets tonight and really lock in and focus, and I think that shows in our defensive numbers as well."

Mary Emily Morgan and Sarah MacLean led the charge for the Terriers with 17 and 15 kills, respectively. MacLean hit a staggering .520 on the night with only two errors in 25 attempts. Natalie Arnold tallied seven kills and was unblemished in her 11 swings for a .636 clip. Bradley Brown also hit high at .385 with six kills and one miscue on 13 attempts.

"When we're passing really well on serve receive and defense and we can get the ball to target, our offense is really hard to stop as we run fast plays to both pins and the middles," said MacLean of the offensive numbers.

Taylor Pecht dished 30 assists to lead the team, and she notched a double-double with her 13 digs. It's her 15th of the season, tied for the fifth most in a single season in program history. It is also her 22nd career double-double. Maddy Frazier dished 18 helpers of her own.
