Men's Basketball Suffers Slow Second Half in Loss at College of Charleston

CHARLESTON, S.C. – The Wofford men's basketball team (4-7) had it all knotted up a 34-all coming out of the break, but a sluggish start to the second stanza proved too much to overcome in a 77-67 loss at TD Arena on Monday night. This was the first meeting between the teams since 2014 when Charleston (8-2) was a member of the Southern Conference.

The Terriers finished the night shooting 33.3 percent (23-69) from the field while knocking down eight three-pointers. Charleston had a hot start but cooled off to finish at a 45.8 percent (27-59) clip from the field. The Cougars hit 12 deep balls at a 50 percent mark.

The Terriers were led by four double-digit performances, with Justin Bailey pacing the team at 13 points. Kyler Filewich, Jackson Sivills and Luke Flynn followed behind with 11 points each. The 11 markers by Flynn serve as a new career high. Wofford continued to share the ball well, notching 14 assists on 23 made baskets. Luke Flynn and Corey Tripp led the group with three apiece.

Wofford dominated the glass 48-36 including a season-high 22 offensive rebounds. The 22 boards on the offensive end are the most by the team since grabbing 24 against Air Force in 2010. Kyler Filewich led the way for the Terriers, pulling down a season-high 16 boards to secure his fourth double-double of the year. Jeremy Lorenz followed behind with seven of his own.

Charleston jumped on the board first, but Kyler Filewich nailed a pair of free throws to give the Terriers their first points of the night. After Wofford took a quick 4-2 lead, the Cougars knocked in back-to-back triples to take the advantage. Anthony Arrington, Jr. answered with a three of his own, but it was Charleston rattling off a 12-2 run to a take a controlling nine-point lead over Wofford.

The Terriers cut it down to five with just over 11 minutes of action left in the first half after five-straight points from Jackson Sivills. Charleston had the answer, however, scoring three-consecutive buckets to stretch the lead back out to 12 points at the under eight media timeout.

Wofford showed resilience, though, closing the half on a 17-5 run which featured 14 unanswered points. Defense was key in the 12-point swing as the team kept the Cougars scoreless for almost seven minutes of game time. A three-point play by Charleston seconds before the buzzer tied the game at 34 points each.

The Cougars opened the scoring in the second half as well, converting a three-pointer on the first possession of the half. Three makes from the charity stripe on the other side by Justin Bailey tied it once more at 37-all. Wofford entered a scoring drought from there, going the next eight minutes without a point. The Cougars capitalized with 25 unanswered points.

Luke Flynn ended the drought with a three, which sparked an 8-0 run from the Terriers. The team fought hard in the last 10 minutes to mount a comeback, cutting the lead down to 11 points with four minutes left in the game. The Cougar lead would prove too much to overcome as the game would end 77-67 in favor of Charleston.

Wofford will have a quick turnaround as the team will travel to Missouri to take on the Saint Louis Billikens on Wednesday night at 8:00 p.m. eastern time. The final game before Christmas can be streamed on ESPN+.
