ELON, N.C. – The Wofford men's basketball team (4-6) dropped its first road game of the month 79-56 to the Elon Phoenix (6-3) at the Schar Center on Saturday night. The Terriers struggled from the field, shooting just 29.7 percent on the night.
Elon shot 59.6 percent (28-47) from the field while knocking down 11 three-pointers at a 50 percent clip. Wofford finished the night shooting 29.7 percent while hitting nine threes. Three Terriers finished in double-figures with
Corey Tripp leading the way at 12 points.
Justin Bailey and
Jackson Sivills followed the senior guard with 11 points each.
The team totaled 16 assists on 21 made field goals.
Jeremy Lorenz paced the team with six helpers, a new career high for him.
Corey Tripp notched five assists to accompany his double-digit performance. Wofford won the turnover battle by a wide margin, forcing 16 Elon turnovers while only giving the ball up nine times. Eight steals were made of the 16 turnovers, with
Corey Tripp swiping a season-high three steals.
Elon won the battle on the boards, grabbing 40 rebounds compared to Wofford's 34. However, the Terriers pulled down 19 offensive rebounds to the Phoenix six.
Kyler Filewich finished the night with eight rebounds, while
Jackson Sivills tallied a season-high six boards.
Jeremy Lorenz recorded five rebounds to go along with six points and six assists.
The Terriers jumped on the board first as
Jackson Sivills nailed a three-pointer on the first possession of the game. Elon came storming back, however, rattling off eleven unanswered points to take an 11-3 lead at the 16-minute mark.
A steal and a dunk from
Corey Tripp ended the skid, followed by a layup by
Anthony Arrington, Jr. Wofford kept battling, as a three-pointer from
Justin Bailey tied the game at 17-17 with just under eight minutes of action left. After tying the game again at 20-all, Elon embarked on an 8-0 run. The Phoenix kept that lead for the remainder of the half. Wofford would head into the break trailing 37-29.
The first five minutes of the second half saw both teams swapping blows until Elon took a controlling 20-point lead with 13:06 left in the game. Nine unanswered points fueled the lead. The Terriers could not fight their way back, ultimately losing the game 79-56.
Wofford will take a nine-day break before traveling to the College of Charleston on Monday, December 16, for a Monday night matchup at 7:00 p.m. Two days later the Terriers will travel to Saint Louis for their last game before Christmas.
