Men’s Basketball Races Past The Citadel In Second Half

Spartanburg, SC – After shooting 2-for-13 from the perimeter in the first half, Wofford men's basketball turned in a 9-for-13 second half shooting performance from three to beat The Citadel 77-64 to move to 7-5 in the Southern Conference.

The Terriers trailed 17-6 early in the first half before embarking on a 23-12 run over the next nine minutes and eleven seconds to tie the game at 29 (including a 10-0 run over a two minute and 25 second span to force a Citadel timeout with 4:24 remaining. Freshman Belal El Shakery carried the load for the Terriers offensively, scoring just one shy of his career high in the first half alone- tallying ten points, four rebounds (three of which were offensive), and a block. The freshman would end his night with a new career-high in points with 15 and tied his career-high in blocks (two blocks, last done against Southern Wesleyan on December 29, 2023).

Out of the break, Wofford connected on three of its first five three-point attempts to briefly take a two- point lead that the Bulldogs took back and ran to six in a span of three minutes and 22 seconds. The Terriers responded by drilling three more triples, including consecutive ones from junior Dillon Bailey (his second and third of the half) to permanently take the lead at the 9:35 mark. Bailey finished the contest tied for Wofford's leading scorer with El Shakery, with Bailey notching his eighth double digit scoring second half (ten points on 3-for-4 shooting and 1-for-2 free throws).

As a team Wofford was 30.3 percentage points better in the second half compared to the first (16-for-23 in the second half compared to 11-for-28 in the first) while limiting The Citadel to three fewer field goals between halves (9-for-23 down from 12-for-23).

The win completes Wofford's third straight regular season series sweep over the Bulldogs and the sixth sweep in the last eight seasons. The team is back on the road for Wednesday's matchup, this time taking on Mercer in Macon, Georgia on February 14, before returning home looking to avenge the loss to UNCG earlier in the campaign. Both matches are scheduled for 7 PM and can be streamed on ESPN+.
