CONWAY, S.C. – The Wofford College women's lacrosse team opened the 2024 season with a 21-5 loss to Coastal Carolina on Sunday afternoon at Brooks Stadium. The Chanticleers scored the first six goals in the game and allowed only two Wofford goals in the second half.
Wofford was led by
Bria Foley with two goals and two assists, eclipsing the 100-career point mark in the game.
Emma Stalteri,
Carley Irvin and
Carlie Cutinella each had a goal as well.
Brooke Meltcher had four ground balls, while
Kristen Courtemanche had two caused turnovers.
Coastal Carolina opened the scoring with a goal at the 12:14 mark of the first quarter. They would build a 6-0 lead with a minute left in the quarter. The Terriers got on the board with three seconds left with a goal by Carly Irvin.
Wofford scored first in the second quarter when
Bria Foley scored her first goal for the Terriers at the 11:13 mark.
Carlie Cutinella added a goal to cut the lead to 6-3 with 7:59 left in the second quarter. The Chanticleers responded with four goals in under three minutes to take a 10-3 lead with 5:58 left in the opening half. Coastal Carolina added four more goals for a 14-3 advantage at the half.
The Terriers opened the scoring in the second half with a goal by
Emma Stalteri to make it a 14-4 game. The Chanticleers added two more goals before
Bria Foley found the back of the net with just over a minute left in the third quarter for a 16-5 game.
To open the fourth quarter, Coastal Carolina scored in the first ten seconds to extend the lead to 17-5. They added four more goals and were able to keep the Terriers off the scoreboard to secure a 21-5 win.
Wofford will host Stetson on Friday, February 16 for the home opener at Gibbs Stadium at 3:00 p.m.
