SPARTANBURG, S.C. – In the home opener for the Wofford College women's lacrosse team, they outscored Stetson 20-19 at Gibbs Stadium on Friday afternoon. The Terriers had an 11-10 lead at the half and both teams added nine goals each in the second half for the final one-goal margin.
Wofford (1-1) was led by
Bria Foley with six goals and seven assists for a school-record 13 points in a game. She also tied the Big South record for points in a game.
Carley Irvin added five goals, with another three by
Addison Witkowski as a total of seven Terriers scored in the game. In goal,
Ella Smithers had a career-high ten saves.
Olivia Graebner led the team with eight draw controls and
Brooke Meltcher had three caused turnovers. The Hatters fall to 1-1 on the season and were led by Sam King with seven goals.
"I am super happy for the team win today," said head coach
Jessie Aguglia. "We saw a lot of outstanding play all around and are so proud we were able to finish the game."
Stetson opened the scoring in the opening minute of play and the Hatters were matched by
Bria Foley and the Terriers shortly after. The teams continued to trade goals and at the end of the first quarter Stetson had a 7-6 advantage. In the second period, the score was tied at 7, 8, and 9 before Wofford took a 10-9 lead at 5:20 for the first time. With two minutes left in the half, the Hatters tied the game, but a free position shot by
Bria Foley with 1:31 left in the half gave Wofford a 11-10 lead at the break.
In the first seven minutes of the third quarter, Wofford outscored Stetson 4-1 on the way to a 15-11 advantage. At the end of the quarter, the Terriers had a 16-13 lead.
Addison Witkowski had an early goal in the fourth quarter for a 17-13 lead, but a 5-0 run by the Hatters gave them an 18-17 lead with 7:13 left in the game. Trailing by one, Wofford tied the game at 19-19 with 3:14 left on a goal by
Carlie Cutinella.
Addison Witkowski scored a free position goal with 2:34 remaining and Wofford held on for the victory.
Wofford will visit Lehigh on Sunday, February 25, before beginning a five-game home stand on Thursday, March 7.
