BETHLEHAM, Pa. – On Sunday afternoon, the Wofford women's lacrosse team was defeated 15-9 by Lehigh at the Ulrich Sports Complex. The Mountain Hawks had a 9-5 lead at the half and held the Terriers to four second-half goals to secure the win.
Wofford (1-2) was led by
Emma Stalteri with three goals and an assist.
Addison Witkowski and
Olivia Graebner added two goals each. In goal,
Ella Smithers tied a career-high with ten saves. Wofford's defense caused 15 turnovers, the second-most in school history, as six players had two each.
Lily Barger had five ground balls. The Mountain Hawks are 2-1 on the season and were led by Emma Eberhardt with five goals.
The Mountain Hawks got on the board first at 11:56 in the first quarter, but it was matched led than a minute later by
Emma Stalteri. A goal by
Laura Montagna at 8:25 gave the Terriers a 2-1 lead, but four straight goals to end the quarter gave Lehigh a 5-2 advantage.
In the second quarter, Wofford added a goal by
Addison Witkowski to make it 5-3 at 13:16. After two more goals by Lehigh,
Emma Stalteri added a pair of goals to cut the lead to 7-5 with three minutes left in the half. Lehigh scored once more for a 9-5 advantage at the break.
Lehigh scored the first three goals of the second half to push the lead to 12-5 before
Olivia Graebner scored at 8:01 for the Terriers. A Mountain Hawk goal was matched by a goal from
Addison Witkowski for a 13-7 score at the end of the third quarter.
Carlie Cutinella scored for Wofford four minutes into the fourth quarter, but Lehigh answered with a pair of goals. With four minutes remaining in the game,
Olivia Graebner scored for Wofford to make the final margin 15-9.
Wofford will begin a five-game home stand on Thursday, March 7 against Campbell at 3:00 p.m.
