Game Recap: Men's Basketball | | Tyler Zaubi

Men’s Basketball Falls on Road to Furman

Greenville, SC – Wofford men's basketball fell to .500 in SoCon play after dropping a road contest with the Furman Paladins 82-67.

Neither team created more than five points of separation through the first 11:30 of the game and when Furman looked poised to firmly take control of the game with a seven-point lead at the 8:28 mark , the Terriers embarked on an extended 16-8 run that lasted six minutes and four seconds that gave Wofford its final lead of the contest at 37-36.

Junior Jackson Sivills and sophomore Chase Cormier were instrumental to the Terrier successes in the first half as the pair combined to shoot 5-for-7 from three and two rebounds each.

An 8-2 run to close the first half followed by back-to-back three pointers out of the half for Furman firmly put the Paladins in control of the game and while Wofford would respond with back-to-back buckets to cut the deficit to six, the Paladins responded with a 7-0 run that made their lead 13 and only once let the lead under ten points from that moment on.

Despite the defeat, Wofford played Furman near evenly or better in several categories including field goal percentage (Furman 2.8% advantage), three-pointers made (even at 12), points in the paint (Wofford two-point advantage), rebounds (Wofford +6 advantage), second chance points (Wofford +10 advantage) and bench points (Wofford +14 advantage). Where Wofford suffered its biggest deficits were in turnovers (lost the turnover battle 12-3) and Free-Throws (Wofford was 5-for-12 compared to Furman's 14-for-20).

Individually, junior Kyler Filewich grabbed a game high 11 rebounds to now give him 260 on the season. Already the best rebounder of the past four seasons, Filewich joins Cameron Jackson in 2018-19, Lee Skinner in 2013-14 and Tim Johnson in 2008-09, 2009-10 and 2010-11 as just the fourth Terrier this century to grab 250 rebounds or more in a single season. Also, with at least three games remaining, Filewich needs only two rebounds to pass Johnson's 2008-09 rebounding output for the fifth most this century and seven more board to pass Jackson for fourth most (the current high for the century is 288 by Tim Johnson in 2010-11).

Wofford wraps up action at Jerry Richardson Indoor Stadium for the season next time out as the team hosts SoCon leader Samford on Wednesday, February 28, before heading to VMI next Saturday for the regular season finale. February 28th's match is slated for a 7 PM tip while next Saturday is scheduled to tip at 1 PM, but both matches will be streamed on ESPN+.
