SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The Wofford College men's tennis team was defeated 4-2 by UNC Asheville on Thursday afternoon at the Reeves Tennis Center. The Bulldogs won the doubles point and the first four singles matches were split to give UNC Asheville a 3-2 lead. The final two singles matches went to a third set, with the Bulldogs winning one to take the victory.
In doubles, the #3 pairing of
Ashe Ray and
Ian Rasheed was down 2-1 before winning five straight games to win 6-4. At #1 doubles,
Max Graham and
Alex Horn were down 5-2 and responded to make it 5-4. The Bulldogs won the match 6-4. In the deciding doubles match at the #2 position, the Bulldogs took the point with a 6-3 win.
Jack Deveney took the #5 singles position with a 6-4, 6-1 win but the Bulldogs answered with a win at the #2 position. At the #6 position, the Bulldogs won the first set in a tiebreaker and then won the second set.
Max Graham won the first set 6-2 at #1 singles and then won the second set 6-2 as well.
The final two matches each went to a third set with the Bulldogs leading 3-2 overall. At #3 singles,
Will Fullett lost the first set 7-6 in a tiebreaker and won the second set 7-5. In the third set, the Bulldogs came away with a 7-5 win to clinch the match. At #4 singles,
Robbie Young won the first set 6-2, but lost the second set 6-3. In the third set, Young took a 2-1 lead and then it was tied at 4-4 and 5-5. The Bulldogs took a 6-5 lead and the match was unfinished.
Wofford (0-3) will remain at home with a match on Friday at 4:00 p.m. against Converse and on Saturday at 11:00 a.m. against Emmanuel. The Bulldogs improve to 4-1 on the season.
