Spartanburg, SC – In a night of firsts, Wofford softball earned the program's first victory after defeating Robert Morris 3-0 to cap night two of the Terrier Invite.
Sophomore
Margaret Axelson spun the first complete game shutout in program history and did so in dominant fashion- allowing only three Colonial baserunners the entire night (neither of the three runners advanced past second base). Behind Axelson was a strong Terrier defense that committed no errors and retired Robert Morris in order in the first, sixth and seventh innings. Combined with her appearance against Eastern Kentucky, the sophomore has an unblemished ERA through 7.1 innings of work.
Wofford's offense allowed Axelson to pitch from in front in the first inning courtesy of the team's first baserunner, steal, hit, extra base hit, and RBI. Moving into the starting lineup after appearing as a pinch hitter in the previous game, freshman
Desirae Devine worked a walk to lead off the game and immediately put herself in scoring position with the program's first stolen base. Devine finished her night 0-for-1, but with two walks and a run scored. She also assisted on two outs in the field.
Two batters later, junior
Hope Ingle rocketed a ball into left field to replace Devine on second base and put the Terriers in front 1-0.
The Terrier offense struck again in the third inning, this time using the long ball. Junior
Havalynn Abernathy launched Wofford's first home run at Hope Field over the right center wall on her first pitch of the at bat, doubling the Terrier lead. Ingle brought home the final Terrier run in the fifth inning after drawing a walk off of Robert Morris' Jaimee Hardy. The RBI secured Ingle the honor of the first multi-RBI game by a Wofford Terrier and currently leads the team with two RBIs. She also recorded three put outs behind the plate and assisted on another two outs.
Sitting at 1-1 in the Terrier Invite, Wofford rounds out pool play against George Mason on Saturday, February 10, 2024, before playing in either the one-seed versus four-seed or two-seed versus three-seed later in the day Saturday.
A reminder to fans, neither of the two softball games tomorrow will be streamed on ESPN+ and fans are encouraged to visit the Wofford softball schedule page on the athletics website to follow along with live stats and follow Wofford Softball on social media for updates on the day's action.
