Women’s Lacrosse Battles Cincinnati

SPARTANBURG, S.C. –  The Wofford College women's lacrosse team lost a close battle to Cincinnati 15-11 on Thursday afternoon at Gibbs Stadium. The Terriers led 3-1 after the first quarter, but the Bearcats had eight straight goals in the second quarter to take the lead. Both teams had six goals in the second half for the 15-11 final margin.  
 
Wofford (2-4) was led by Laura Montagna with four goals, while Bria Foley had four points on two goals and two assists. Carley Irvin led the team with five draw controls, while Brooke Meltcher picked up five ground balls. The Terriers caused nine turnovers, including two each by Lily Barger, Carlie Cutinella and Ella Davis. Ella Smithers tied a career-high with ten saves.
 
The Bearcats are 7-3 on the season and were led by Lauren Ottensmeyer with three goals and an assist.  
 
The Terriers got on the board first with a goal by Addison Witkowski at the 12:51 mark. After a Bearcat goal was disallowed due to an illegal stick, Bria Foley and Laura Montagna scored to give Wofford a 3-0 lead. The Bearcats got one goal back with 1:02 left in the first quarter for a 3-1 score in favor of the Terriers.
 
The second quarter was controlled early by the Bearcats, scoring eight straight goals for a 9-3 lead at the 8:05 mark. The Terriers responded with goals by Laura Montagna and Carley Irvin to make it a 9-5 margin at the break. In the third quarter, Bria Foley scored less than a minute into play to cut it to a 9-6 game before Cincinnati scored three straight goals for a 12-6 lead. The Terriers kept battling and had goals by Carlie Cutinella and Laura Montagna for a 12-8 game after three quarters.
 
Emma Stalteri scored a free position goal three minutes into the fourth quarter to cut the margin to 12-9. After a Bearcat goal, Carlie Cutinella and Laura Montagna made it a 13-11 game with 7:59 remaining. Cincinnati was able to score the final two goals of the game for the 15-11 margin.
 
Wofford will be back in action on Wednesday, March 20, when the Terriers host Queens at 4:00 p.m.
