SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The Wofford College women's lacrosse team was defeated by Queens University by an 18-11 margin on afternoon at Gibbs Stadium. The Terriers had a 7-6 lead late in the second quarter before the Royals scored six straight goals over the second and third quarters to put the game out of reach.
Wofford (2-5) was led by
Bria Foley with three goals and an assist, while
Emma Stalteri added three goals and
Addison Witkowski had three points on a goal and two assists.
Carley Irvin led the team with six draw controls, while
Barrett Rowe picked up five ground balls. The Terriers caused 15 turnovers, the second-most in school history, as
Addison Witkowski led the team with four.
Ella Smithers had five saves in goal.
The Royals are 6-4 on the season and were led by Kayleen Favreau with six goals and five assists for eleven total points. Queens scored the first five goals in the game and had a 5-0 lead at the end of the first quarter.
In the second quarter, Wofford rallied with five straight goals to tie the game as five different Terriers found the back of the net. After Queens regained the lead,
Bria Foley scored to tie the game at 6-6. A free position goal by
Emma Stalteri gave Wofford a 7-6 lead with 4:17 left in the first half. The Royals scored the next three goals for a 9-7 advantage at the half.
The third quarter saw the Royals continue the scoring streak with the first three goals as they built a 12-7 lead. A goal by
Carlie Cutinella ended the streak, but the Royals added two more goals for a 14-8 advantage at 13:04 in the fourth quarter. After a free position shot by
Shadan Bankston, Queens added three more goals to push the lead to 17-9. A goal by
Emma Stalteri was matched by the Royals and
Bria Foley had a free position goal with 16 seconds remaining to provide the 18-11 final margin.
Wofford will be back in action on Saturday, March 23, when the Terriers host Kennesaw State at 1:00 p.m. for the final non-conference game of the season.
