SPARTANBURG, S.C. – In the final non-conference game of the season, the Wofford College women's lacrosse team defeated Kennesaw State 22-14 at Gibbs Stadium on Saturday afternoon. The Terriers scored first and never trailed as goalie
Ella Smithers set a school record with 20 saves in the game.
Wofford (3-5) had five goals each from
Bria Foley and
Emma Stalteri, while
Addison Witkowski and
Carley Irvin added four goals each. The 22 total goals were the second most in school history and the most since 2019.
Carley Irvin led the team with four draw controls, while
Ella Smithers picked up seven ground balls in addition to her school-record 20 saves.
The Terriers got on the board first with a pair of goals by
Bria Foley less than two minutes into the game. After a goal by the Owls, Wofford was able to build a 7-4 lead at the end of the first quarter following three goals by
Emma Stalteri and one each by
Carley Irvin and
Addison Witkowski.
In the second quarter, Wofford was up 11-6 before the Owls scored four straight goals to cut the advantage to 11-10 with 35 seconds left before halftime. A free position shot by
Carlie Cutinella with one second left gave the Terriers a 12-10 lead at the break.
Wofford scored the first three goals in the third quarter for a 15-10 lead. Following a goal by Kennesaw State, Wofford scored three straight goals as the lead extended to 18-11. The Owls got one goal back, but the Terriers had an 18-12 advantage heading into the fourth quarter. In the final fifteen minutes, Wofford scored four goals to only two for the Owls for the final margin of 22-14.
"Possession is the name of the game and with Ella being able to maintain our offensive possessions was big," said head coach
Jessie Aguglia. "Without Ella that would have been a totally different game. Our draw units did their jobs as well. It is a good thing on offense that we can pass the ball around and can be dynamic and not rely on one or two people as we spread it out. We are trying to click on all cylinders right now. We saw a cohesive unit today which is important and stringing 60 minutes together is going to win us games heading into conference play."
The Owls are 5-5 on the season and were led by Caroline Farley with seven goals and an assist. Wofford will open Big South play on Wednesday, March 27 at Furman University for a 6:00 p.m. contest.
