Women’s Lacrosse Drops Conference Opener At Furman

GREENVILLE, S.C. –  To begin Big South play, the Wofford College women's lacrosse team was defeated 12-10 on Wednesday evening by Furman University at Paladin Stadium. The Terriers had a 6-4 lead at the half, but the Paladins scored three straight goals to open the second half to give them a lead they would not give up.  
 
Wofford (3-6, 1-0) was led by Emma Stalteri with three goals, while Bria Foley had two goals and three assists for five points. Carley Irvin lead the team with six draw controls and Lily Barger had three caused turnovers. Four Terriers had three ground balls each. Ella Smither made eight saves in goal.
 
The Terriers got on the board first with a goal by Emma Stalteri two minutes into play. Bria Foley added a goal for a 2-0 lead and Furman got on the board at the 4:32 mark of the first quarter to cut the lead to 2-1. An unassisted goal by Bria Foley gave Wofford a 3-1 lead with 2:22 left in the opening quarter and with 54 seconds left Emma Stalteri pushed the lead to 4-1.
 
Furman opened the scoring in the second period at 12:33 to make it a 4-2 game. Carlie Cutinella got the goal back at the 8:53 mark for a 5-2 lead. After another goal by Carley Irvin, the Paladins scored the final two goals of the first half to go into the break with a 6-4 Terrier lead.
 
In the second half, the Paladins scored three straight goals and had a 7-6 lead at the 3:44 mark. A no-look backhanded goal by Shadan Bankston tied the game at 7-7 with 2:54 left in the third quarter. Another goal by the Paladins gave them an 8-7 advantage after three quarters.
 
The Paladins scored the first three goals of the fourth period and had an 11-7 lead with 10:59 on the clock. Emma Stalteri and Carley Irvin scored for the Terriers to make it an 11-9 game. After a Wofford turnover, the Paladins quickly moved down the field and took a 12-9 lead with 4:07 remaining. A goal by Carlie Cutinella made it 12-10 a minute later, but the Terriers could get no closer.
 
The Paladins are 3-7 overall this season and 1-0 in the Big South. They have won all seven meetings between the teams, however the two-goal difference in the game is the smallest in the series. Wofford returns home on Wednesday, April 3 to host Longwood in a noon contest at Gibbs Stadium.
