Women’s Lacrosse Falls To Longwood

SPARTANBURG, S.C. –  On Wednesday afternoon, the Wofford College women's lacrosse team was defeated 15-11 by Longwood at Gibbs Stadium. The Terriers had a 6-5 lead at the half, but the Lancers had a 10-5 advantage in the second half to secure the win.   
 
Wofford (3-7, 0-2) was led by Addison Witkowski with two goals and an assist, while Shadan Bankston had a goal and three assists. Bria Foley added two goals and led the team with five draw controls. Emma Stalteri had a team-high three caused turnovers and Brooke Meltcher had five ground balls. Ella Smithers had four saves in goal.
 
A goal by Laura Montagna at the 12:48 mark of the first quarter gave the Terriers the lead. Longwood answered with the next three goals as they took a 3-1 lead at the end of the first quarter.
 
To open the second quarter, Shadan Bankston scored which was matched by the Lancers. A goal by Carly Irvin was also matched by Longwood. In the final three minutes of the first half, Bria Foley, Ella Bartlett and Addison Witkowski scored for the Terries as they had a 6-5 lead and the break.
 
Wofford extended the lead to 7-5 with a goal by Ainsley Towle just 30 seconds into the second half. Longwood would respond with three straight goals to give them an 8-7 lead. A goal by Bria Foley tied the game at 8-8 with 6:38 on the clock. Longwood regained the advantage with a goal two minutes later for a 9-8 lead heading into the fourth quarter.
 
The Lancers started the fourth quarter with three straight goals for a 12-8 lead. The Terriers cut into the lead with a goal by Addison Witkowski for a 12-9 score. Another Lancer goal was match by Ainsley Towle, but two more Longwood goals made it 15-10 with under two minutes to play. A free position goal by Emma Stalteri with 16 seconds left on the clock provided the final 15-11 margin.
 
Longwood is 5-6 overall this season and 3-0 in the Big South. Wofford will play at Radford on Saturday, April 6.
