SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The Wofford College women's lacrosse team scored three late goals in a 13-10 win over Radford on a cold Saturday afternoon at the Student Outdoor Recreation Complex. The Terriers built a 10-6 lead after three quarters, but the Highlanders scored four straight goals to tie the game. Wofford responded with three straight goals to close out the road win.
Wofford (4-7, 1-2) was led by
Carlie Cutinella with four goals,
Carley Irvin with three goals and an assist, and
Bria Foley with two goals and three assists. Irvin also led the team with seven draw controls.
Lily Barger had a team-best three caused turnovers and five ground balls.
Ella Smithers made nine saves in goal for the Terriers.
The Highlanders got on the scoreboard first three minutes into the game.
Carlie Cutinella tied the game with 10:19 on the clock in the first quarter and then
Bria Foley gave the Terriers the lead with an unassisted goal at 6:55. Less than a minute later another goal by Cutinella pushed the lead to 3-1. The advantage grew to 4-1 with a goal by
Carley Irvin before the Highlanders answered with back-to-back goals.
Carlie Cutinella gave Wofford a 5-3 lead with 16 seconds left in the first quarter.
To open the second quarter,
Emma Stalteri scored just a minute into play for a 6-3 advantage.
Carley Irvin added a goal to push the lead to 7-3 with 11:38 on the clock. Radford added a goal just 30 seconds later, but
Laura Montagna found
Carley Irvin open in front of the net for an 8-4 lead at the 6:37 mark.
In the third quarter, neither team was able to create many offensive chances until
Carlie Cutinella scored a free position goal at the 6:31 mark to increase the lead to 9-4. Two minutes later the Highlanders scored their first goal of the second half to cut the lead to 9-6.
Shadan Bankston responded with a goal for a 10-6 lead with 2:27 left in the quarter.
Radford scored three straight goals to open the fourth quarter to cut the lead to 10-9 with 10:45 on the clock. Playing a woman-up, the Highlanders tied the game at 10-10 at the 8:42 mark.
Emma Stalteri scored with 6:13 remaining to regain the lead at 11-10 and a goal by
Bria Foley put the Terriers up 12-10 at the 5:45 mark.
Addison Witkowski added a goal with 2:13 left in the game for a three-goal lead. The Terriers controlled the ball for the final two minutes to secure the victory.
Radford is 4-8 overall this season and 1-2 in the Big South. Wofford remain on the road and play at Winthrop on Wednesday, April 10.
