SPARTANBURG, S.C. – On Wednesday afternoon, the Wofford College women's lacrosse team saw five players record a hat trick in a 20-16 win over Winthrop at Eagle Field. The Terriers had a 12-7 lead at the half after a strong second quarter and kept the advantage throughout the second half for the road victory.
Wofford (5-7, 2-2) was led by
Carlie Cutinella and
Laura Montagna with four goals each.
Bria Foley had three goals and five assists for eight points. She now has 56 points which is a new single season record at Wofford, topping the previous mark of 49 by
Olivia Abe in 2023.
Carley Irvin and
Emma Stalteri each had three goals. Foley also led the team with seven draw controls, while four Terriers had four ground balls each. Three players added two caused turnovers each as the team had ten in the game.
Ella Smithers had two saves.
The Eagles scored ninety seconds into the game for an early lead. Wofford's
Laura Montagna tied the game with a goal at the 12:36 mark, but the Eagles regained the lead on their next possession go up 2-1. With 10:02 on the clock,
Emma Stalteri scored the equalizer and two minutes later
Carley Irvin gave Wofford a 3-2 lead. The Eagles added back-to-back goals to take a 4-3 advantage.
Addison Witkowski and
Laura Montagna scored back-to-back and regained the lead at 5-4 with 2:47 left in the opening quarter. The Eagles scored to even the game at 5-5, but Wofford had a 6-5 lead after the first quarter following a goal by
Carlie Cutinella.
Wofford opened the scoring in the second quarter with goals by
Emma Stalteri,
Laura Montagna and
Carley Irvin for a 9-5 lead with 9:46 on the clock. After a timeout by the Eagles, Witkowski won a draw control for the Terriers and
Bria Foley added a goal to go up 10-5. Winthrop scored back-to-back goals to cut the lead to 10-7 with 3:34 remaining in the first half. With under a minute to play,
Emma Stalteri added a free position goal and
Carlie Cutinella scored as well to go up 12-7 at the break.
To begin the second half,
Carlie Cutinella scored less than a minute into play. The Eagles responded with a goal, but
Shadan Bankston added a goal for a 14-8 lead at the 12:34 mark of the third period. The teams traded goals again, with
Carley Irvin finding the back of the net for a 15-9 advantage with 6:06 on the clock. With rain beginning to fall,
Carlie Cutinella scored her fourth goal of the game for the 16-9 lead. The Eagles got one goal back before
Bria Foley scored with 15 seconds left to take a 17-10 advantage.
In the fourth quarter, the Eagles scored three goals in the first three minutes of play to cut the lead to 17-13. A free position goal by
Addison Witkowski pushed the advantage to 18-13 with 10:32 remaining and a minute later
Bria Foley added a goal. Wofford reached the 20-goal mark for the third time this season when
Laura Montagna scored at the 5:33 mark. Winthrop added three goals in the last three minutes of play for the 20-16 final score.
Winthrop is 1-11 overall this season and 1-4 in the Big South. Wofford will be back home on Wednesday, April 17, against High Point.
