Women’s Lacrosse Drops Close Contest to High Point

SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The Wofford College women's lacrosse team had a 14-13 lead with ten minutes remaining against High Point on Wednesday afternoon, but the Panthers scored four unanswered goals to earn a 17-14 win at Gibbs Stadium. Wofford had the lead after the first quarter and the game was tied at the half and at the end of three quarters.    
 
Wofford (5-8, 2-3) was led by Addison Witkowski with four free position goals, while Bria Foley had three goals and two assists for five points and Carlie Cutinella added three goals and an assist. Bria Foley had a team-high nine draw controls. Lily Barger had three caused turnovers and had five ground balls, giving her a school-record 45 on the season. Ella Smithers had six saves for the Terriers.
 
The Panthers scored first, but goals by Carley Irvin and Bria Foley gave the Terriers a 2-1 lead after six minutes of play. After a High Point goal tied it, Wofford answered with back-to-back goals from Carlie Cutinella and a goal by Addison Witkowski for a 5-2 lead. Following a pair of High Point goals, Carlie Cutinella gave Wofford a 6-4 lead at the end of the first quarter.
 
To open the second quarter, High Point scored three straight goals to take a 7-6 lead. Wofford's Bria Foley tied it at 7-7 with 9:13 on the clock. The teams then traded goals, with Addison Witkowski tying the game at 8-8 at the 7:50 mark. Neither team was able to add a goal in the quarter.
 
The Terriers had back-to-back goals in the third quarter by Emma Stalteri and Bria Foley for a10-8 lead, but the Panthers then scored three straight goals to go up 11-10 with 7:13 left in the quarter. Wofford answered with goals by Addison Witkowski and Bria Foley for a 12-11 lead with five minutes remaining. The Panthers scored the final goal of the quarter with 2:25 left to send the game the to fourth quarter tied.
 
Wofford scored just two minutes into the fourth quarter on a free position goal by Addison Witkowsi, her fourth of the game. After the Panthers tied it up at 13-13, Wofford regained the advantage with a goal by Emma Stalteri with 10:52 remaining. High Point tied the game a minute later and then neither team scored for almost five minutes. The Panthers took a 15-14 lead with 4:32 left on the clock and added two more goals late for the 17-14 final margin.
 
High Point is 9-5 overall this season and 5-1 in the Big South. They were led by Jordan Miles with five goals.
 
Wofford will play their final regular season road game on Saturday, April 20, at Gardner-Webb.
