BOILING SPRINGS, N.C. – On Saturday afternoon the Wofford College women's lacrosse team scored first and never trailed in a 17-7 win at Gardner-Webb. In the third quarter, the Terriers had a 12-6 lead when a lightning delay halted the game. Once play resumed at Spangler Stadium, Wofford scored the next three goals on the way to the 17-7 final score.
Wofford (6-8, 3-3) was led by
Bria Foley with five goals and four assists for nine points. With her four assists, she set a new single season record with 34 for the Terriers.
Emma Stalteri added four goals, while
Addison Witkowski and
Carley Irvin each had three goals.
Vivian Chiomento had six draw controls to lead the team.
Ella Smithers had five ground balls and seven saves.
Lily Barger added to her school-record of 48 ground balls in a single season. The team caused a school-record 18 turnovers, with four players having three each.
The Terriers scored first on a free position goal by
Bria Foley, but the Runnin' Bulldogs answered with a goal to tie the game at 1-1 with 10:40 on the clock in the first quarter. Wofford took the lead on a goal by
Emma Stalteri and back-to-back goals by
Carley Irvin.
Bria Foley added a goal for a 5-1 lead at the midpoint of the opening quarter.
Emma Stalteri scored her second of the game before Gardner-Webb scored with under two minutes remaining for a 6-2 game.
In the second quarter,
Bria Foley secured a hat trick with her third goal of the game for a 7-2 lead. Gardner-Webb answered with the next two goals, but goals by
Addison Witkowski and
Bria Foley gave Wofford a 9-4 lead with 7:22 left in the second quarter. After a goal by
Carlie Cutinella, Gardner-Webb scored with 22 seconds left in the half for a 10-5 score at the break.
Wofford opened the second half with goal by
Carley Irvin and
Emma Stalteri for a 12-5 lead at the 9:01 mark. Two minutes later the Runnin' Bulldogs scored. At the 3:59 mark of the third quarter, the game entered a delay for lightning. After waiting nearly two hours, action resumed and
Carlie Cutinella,
Emma Stalteri and
Bria Foley scored three unanswered goals for a 15-6 advantage at the end of the quarter.
Addison Witkowski scored less than two minutes in to the fourth quarter to push the lead to 16-6 and a running clock. Gardner-Webb added a goal with 9:12 remaining, but Witkowsi scored again with 3:06 left in the game to push the advantage back to ten goals and Wofford ran out the clock.
Gardner-Webb is 0-16 overall this season and 0-7 in the Big South. They were led by Jamie Weber with four goals.
Wofford will play the final two games of the season at home, hosting Mercer on Wednesday, April 24, and then Presbyterian College on Saturday, April 27.
