Men’s Tennis Drops Rain Delayed Match at Mercer

MACON, Ga. – In a Sunday match that was delayed several times by rain, the Wofford College men's tennis team was defeated 4-3 by Mercer at the LeRoy Peddy Tennis Center. The Terriers won the doubles point and each team won two singles matches before the match was halted with Wofford leading 3-2. When play resumed Monday morning, the Bears won both remaining matches for a 4-3 win.  
 
After a morning rain storm, the match start was delayed by nearly three hours. Once underway, the Bears won the #2 doubles match 6-2. Wofford answered as the pair of Ashe Ray and Ian Rasheed won at #3 doubles. At #1 doubles, the match was tied five times before the Bears led 6-5 over the Wofford pair of Robbie Young and Will Fullett. The Terriers tied the match at 6 and then won the tiebreaker 7-4 to claim the doubles point.
 
In singles, Alex Horn took the #6 position by a 6-1, 6-3 score and Jack Deveney won 6-0, 6-2 at the #5 singles spot. The Bears then took the #3 and #4 positions in straight sets, with Wofford holding a 3-2 lead in the overall match.
 
The final two singles matches both went to three sets. At the #2 position, Ashe Ray won the first set 6-4, but dropped the second set 2-6. Ray jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the third set before the Bears tied it at 4-4. At #1 singles, Max Graham won the first set 6-3 before falling 3-6 in the second set and he was trailing 0-5 in the third set when the match was halted with a rain delay.
 
Play resumed on Monday morning, with the Bears claiming the third set at #1 singles 6-0 to tie the match at 3-3. At #2 singles, Mercer won the last two games for a 6-4 win which gave the Bears the overall match victory.
 
Wofford (6-7, 1-1) will return home on Tuesday, March 19 to host UNCG at 3:30 p.m. Mercer is now 3-9 overall and 1-0 in SoCon play.
