SPARTANBURG, S.C. – On Tuesday afternoon, the Wofford College men's tennis team defeated UNCG by a 6-1 margin at the Reeves Tennis Center. The Terriers won the doubles point and then took five of the six singles matches for the home SoCon victory.
At #3 doubles,
Ashe Ray and
Ian Rasheed picked up a 6-2 win for the Terriers. The Spartans then tied the doubles point with a 6-1 win at the #2 position.
Will Fullett and
Robbie Young took a 5-1 lead at the #1 position. The Spartans rallied with four straight games for a 5-5 score. Wofford broke serve for a 6-5 lead and then held serve for a 7-5 win which gave the Terriers the doubles point.
In singles, the Terriers won the first set in five of the six matches.
Robbie Young had a 6-4, 6-1 win at the #2 position, which was followed by a 6-4, 6-4 decision for
Jack Deveney at the #4 position. At #3 singles,
Will Fullett won the first set 6-1 but trailed 3-4 in the second set. He took a 5-4 lead before the match was tied at 6-6. Fullett took the tiebreaker 7-4, which clinched the overall win for the Terriers.
At #5 singles,
Alex Horn won 6-4, 6-4 to give Wofford a 5-0 lead in the match. The final two singles matches were decided in a third set tiebreaker. At #1 singles,
Ashe Ray lost the first set 3-6 but took the second set 6-4. In the tiebreaker, Ray was down 8-9 before tying at 9 and 10. The Spartans held serve on the next two points for a 12-10 win.
Ian Rasheed won the first set 6-4 at #6 singles. In the second set, it was tied 6-6 when the Spartans won the tiebreaker 8-6 for the 7-6 win. Rasheed led 7-5 in the third set tiebreaker and close out the match 10-7.
"We fed off each other and competed extremely well today," said head coach
Rod Ray.
Wofford (7-7, 2-1) will play at East Tennessee State on Sunday, March 24. The final home match of the season will be Friday, March 29 against Chattanooga. UNCG is now 4-9 overall and 0-5 in SoCon play.
