SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The Wofford College men's tennis team opened Southern Conference play with a thrilling 4-3 win over The Citadel at the Reeves Tennis Center on Saturday afternoon. After the Terriers won all three doubles matches, the Bulldogs tied the match by winning three singles matches of the first five. In the final match to be decided,
Robbie Young won in three sets at the #4 position to clinch the Wofford win.
Wofford won all three doubles matches, beginning with a 6-3 win at the #3 position by
Ashe Ray and
Ian Rasheed.

Will Fullett clinched the doubles point with a 6-3 win at the #1 position, with
Max Graham and
Hugo Rask adding at 6-3 win at the #2 position to complete the sweep.
In singles, the Bulldogs took a lead by winning at the #1 and #3 positions. A 6-4, 6-3 win by
Alex Horn at the #6 position and a 6-3, 7-6 (7-3) win by
Jack Deveney at the #5 position put the Terriers back in front at 3-2. A three-set win at the #2 position by the Bulldogs tied the match at 3-3. At the #4 singles position,
Robbie Young lost the first set 5-7 and won the second 6-4. In the deciding third set, Young claimed a 6-2 win that decided the match in favor of the Terriers.
"We beat a good team today," said head coach
Rod Ray. "Our execution in doubles was excellent. The singles came down to toughness and belief and we were strong in both categories."
Wofford (6-5, 1-0) will play at Gardner-Webb on Tuesday, March 5. The next home match is Saturday, March 9, against Elon. The Citadel is now 3-13 overall and 0-1 in league play.
