LEXINGTON, Va. – Despite striking out 12 Keydet batters, the Wofford baseball team dropped game three and the series at Gray-Minor Stadium 10-6 to VMI Saturday afternoon. The Terriers fall to 17-8 (4-2 SoCon) with VMI improving to 14-15 (2-4 SoCon).
Â
Braden Hofmeyer (4-2) suffered the loss for the Terriers in a starting role. He faced only four batters and was charged with four runs.
Camden Wicker tossed 5.0 innings out of the bullpen with four runs surrendered on five hits, and
Kenny Michaels pitched the final 3.0 innings with just two runs on three hits. Both Wicker and Michaels struck out six batters with no walks allowed, with those strikeouts being a career high for both hurlers.
Â
VMI starter Will Riley (4-1) took the win after pitching 7.1 innings with three runs (two earned) allowed on six hits and four walks.
Â
Wofford's seven hits were spread amongst five batters.
Marshall Toole was the lone Terrier with multiple, recording three and reaching a fourth time via the walk. Toole stole two bases to reach 22 on the season, extending his SoCon lead and remaining perfect on his attempts. His on-base streak stretched to 25 games.
Â
Brice Martinez drove home a team-high two runs.
Andrew Mannelly and
Daniel Jackson each added a pair of walks to their one hit, and both of them drove home one run.
Â
The Terriers stole six total bases. Martinez swiped two just like Toole. Mannelly, Jackson and
Dixon Black all added one.
Â
Wofford once again struck first in the top of the first, plating two runs.
Marshall Toole opened the game with a bunt single and a swipe of second, and
Dixon Black worked a walk. A
Brice Martinez single would bring Toole home for the game's first run. Later, with the bases loaded, an error allowed Black to cross the plate for a 2-0 Terrier lead.
Â
But in the bottom of the first, VMI responded with four runs to flip the script and lead 4-2 after just an inning of play.
Â
After a scoreless second inning for both teams, VMI added two more runs in the bottom of the third with a pair of solo home runs. The Keydet lead was 6-2.
Â
The Keydets again utilized the long ball with a two-run homer in the bottom of the fifth to stretch their lead to 8-2.
Â
The Terriers got one run back in the top of the sixth.
David Wiley doubled and advanced to third on an error, and
Tyler Bak lifted a sacrifice fly to plate Wiley and cut into the deficit, 8-3.
Â
VMI tacked on two more insurance runs in the seventh for a 10-3 lead entering the ninth after zeroes for both squads in the eighth.
Â
Wofford refused to go quietly, however, putting up a strong comeback effort. The rally began with a pair of hit batsmen and a walk loading the bases for
Andrew Mannelly, who also worked a walk to plate a run. Martinez added an RBI groundout, and
Daniel Jackson singled home another run. But that was where the rally stalled as VMI secured the 27
th out and picked up the 10-6 win.
Â
The Terriers remain on the road with a pair of midweek contests to conclude their six-game road stretch. Wofford first takes on Charleston Southern on Tuesday, April 2, with a 5:00 p.m. first pitch in the Low Country. The following night, the Terriers will battle former SoCon foe Elon at 6:00 p.m.
